Some upcoming anti-racist events

Thanks to those who came to the Refugees Welcome Dubs day of action – there has been some movement from the Government but it remains pitiful compared to what is needed, and the Dubs amendment still needs to be enforced to allow unaccompanied child refugees into Britain, especially as the French state looks set to demolish the ‘jungle’ shanty town in Calais on Monday 24 October.   We collected about 500 signatures on petitions to lobby Leeds city council to do more to help refugees.

Stand Up To Racism nationally is organising a day of action in support of Alf Dubs Amendment to the Immigration Bill on Friday 14th October and are also organising events on Saturday 15 October.  The ‘Dubs Amendment’ should have triggered the acceptance of thousands of unaccompanied refugee children into Britain, but Theresa May is not enacting the amendment in any meaningful way.

This inaction is taking place at a time when the Calais “jungle” refugee camp is under threat of demolition.  The last demolition of the southern section of the camp in February resulted in a number of child refugees going missing. It is unacceptable that children in the camp are being put at risk of exploitation as a result of the government’s lack of action around the Dubs Amendment.

Help us pressure the government to act on the amendment now.

Leeds Stand Up to Racism have called for an assembly around the Dubs Amendment/unaccompanied child refugees to take place outside Leeds University Student Union on Friday 14 October – 12noon -2pm.  If possible, bring tents etc to help raise awareness and call for the government to #EnactDubsNow .  We are also organising an event on Briggate in Leeds city centre on Saturday 15 October.   For more info email sutrleeds@gmail.com
