Many thanks to all who came to the Charlottesville Solidarity Vigil on Wednesday 16 August called by Leeds Unite Against Fascism, Leeds Black Lives Matter, Leeds Stand Up to Trump and Leeds Stand Up to Racism. Over 100 people attended, and a good range of speakers and organisations represented, including the above groups plus local Labour councillors Javaid Akhtar and David Nagle, Leeds University UCU, Hope Not Hate, Leeds Antifascist Network, Leeds TUC and Wakefield Stand Up to Racism – and we had messages of support from many others who were away who would have liked to have been there. We held a minutes silence in memory of Heather Heyer, and Marvina from Leeds Black Lives Matter read out a statement from Heather’s mother. There was a strong feeling of unity and a determination to continue to resist racism and fascism wherever it arises – including joining the protests organised by Unite Against Fascism and We Are Bradford in Bradford and Keighley against the EDL on Saturday September 2nd. Plus we ended the vigil in style with music and the singing of two classic Woody Guthrie songs including of course ‘All you fascists bound to lose…’
Leeds Solidarity Vigil after the fascist terror in Charlottesville – Wednesday 16 August, from 5pm outside Leeds City Art Gallery –
Supported by Leeds Unite Against Fascism / Leeds Black Lives Matter / Leeds Stand Up To Trump / Leeds Stand Up To Racism
The death of Heather Heyer and the assault on anti fascists in Charlottesville at the hands of James Fields is shocking Donald Trumps America.
Trump’s failure to condemn the assault by American fascists, on a day that saw armed militias dominating the town and black people beaten in the streets, is truly shocking.
Trump’s statements have given confidence to the fascist right in the US. Charlottesville is a terrible warming to anti racists everywhere that we have to stand up against bigotry where ever it raises its head. We need maximum unity against Fascism & Racism….
Anti-fascists will be holding a Vigil in Leeds in protest against Trump and in solidarity with American anti-fascists at the Art Gallery this coming Wednesday from 5pm onwards.
